Within the highly variable anatomy of the paranasal sinuses, the size and location of the middle turbinate often restricts exposure to the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Further, lateralization of the middle turbinate post-operatively can lead to scarring and obstruction of key drainage pathways, including the osteomeatal complex. Numerous techniques and products have tried to address these issues and have either proven to be unwieldy for the surgeon or uncomfortable for patients.
